When I first saw Lilly's beautiful fabric-wrapped soap, my first thought was
that all those little squares of color would make a great quilt! I started
sewing them together into designs--squares, triangles, diamonds,
stars--revelling in all those colors and patterns.
Lately I've gotten interested in making quilts for a wonderful
not-for-profit organization called ABC Quilts. "ABC" stands for At-Risk
Babies' Crib Quilts. The quilts are given free of charge to babies who are
born alcohol- or drug- affected, left as abandoned, or are infected with the
HIV\AIDS virus. The quilts are sent to medical and foster care facilities
across the country and distributed to children in need. Each quilt becomes
the permanent property of the child.
I used to do all my sewing by hand, but since these quilts have to be able
to stand up to hospital-type industrial laundries, I've had to learn to use
a new-fangled invention called a sewing machine. I still piece the quilts
together by hand, but I'm getting better at using the sewing machine for the
bindings and backings.
Since Lilly was the person who introduced me to quilting, it seems fitting
that the wrappings from her soap should be used to make quilts. If you'd
like to take the trouble to send me soap wrappers, you can mail them to
Anita Sanchez, 418 Merry Road,, Amsterdam, NY 12010.
When I look over my soap squares, sometimes I think that all those different
colors and patterns will never blend harmoniously. But put them all
together and, miraculously, they do. All of us are different, but put our
efforts all together, and we can make something special.
Thanks!
Anita
